Custom Part Finishes: All About Bead Blasting

Bead blasting propels fine, round media at controlled pressure to clean, deburr, and smooth surfaces. It’s widely used on aluminum, steel, plastics, and more to achieve a consistent satin/matte look without damaging the base material.

How Bead Blasting Works

Unlike sharp abrasives, smooth spherical beads “peen” the surface lightly, removing contaminants and softening tool marks with minimal material removal. Result: a clean, uniform appearance ideal for cosmetic surfaces and pre-finish prep.

Typical Equipment Features

● Sealed blasting cabinet to contain dust and debris ● Welded frame, clear viewing window with replaceable shields ● Heavy-duty gloves and foot-pedal blasting gun for control ● Media recovery/filtration to maintain consistent results

Common Blasting Media

Glass Beads

Silica-free and chemically inert; produce a bright, clean satin finish with low material removal. Reusable many cycles—excellent for cosmetic cleaning and uniform matte textures.

Steel Shot

Heavier impact for robust cleaning and peening. Suited to steel/cast iron for rust removal and fatigue-strength improvement; highly reusable.

Aluminum Oxide

More aggressive cut for rougher matte textures and strong surface prep ahead of anodizing or paint. Best for hard substrates.

Plastic Media

Lightweight and gentle—good for coating removal and delicate components where minimal substrate change is required.

When to Use Bead Blasting

● Create uniform matte/satin cosmetic surfaces ● Remove oxide, oil, light burrs, and machining marks ● Prepare parts for anodizing, coating, or painting ● Light edge softening without altering critical geometry

Design Tips

● Mask threads/critical fits to preserve tolerances ● Specify areas to blast vs. protect on drawings ● Choose media and pressure by material and desired sheen
