Innovating Stamping Parts: A Manufacturer's Perspective
Product content

Stamping engineering · Practical improvement

For custom stamped parts, improvement is not limited to faster machines. It can begin with a clearer drawing, a more stable forming route, simpler inspection or a tooling change that reduces unnecessary secondary work.

Start with the Functional Requirements

Assembly: identify mating surfaces, locating features and clearance needs.
Critical dimensions: separate functional tolerances from general dimensions.
Appearance: mark cosmetic faces, burr direction and handling requirements.

Improve the Tooling Around the Part

Die route: review progressive, transfer, single-hit or deep-draw options.
Wear points: identify punches, inserts and forming areas that may need closer maintenance.
Future changes: consider likely revisions before the tooling structure is finalized.

Reduce Unnecessary Production Steps

Where geometry allows, pierced, formed, coined or embossed features may be combined within a planned stamping sequence. Secondary machining, tapping, welding or riveting can then be applied only where the drawing requires it.

Match Material and Finish to the Application

Materials: stainless steel, carbon steel, aluminum, copper and brass.
Finishes: plating, passivation, anodizing, powder coating and other specified treatments.
Review: thickness, temper, grain direction, springback and finished interfaces.

Validate Improvements Before Volume Release

Compare the sample with the approved drawing
Check fit, function and critical feature relationships
Confirm surface condition and secondary operations
Record approved revisions for repeat production
