Understanding Sheet Metal Surface Finishes – A Guide for Engineers

1. Introduction

As a professional sheet metal fabrication partner, we know surface finishing is not just about looks — it directly impacts durability, corrosion resistance, and assembly precision. Choosing the right treatment ensures your brackets, enclosures, or housings perform reliably in their intended environment.

2. Common Surface Finish Options

▶ Standard As-Cut Finish

Cost-effective option for non-cosmetic parts or components awaiting secondary processes. Expect some visible tool marks or burrs, suitable for internal parts and prototypes.

Standard As-Cut Finish

▶ Bead Blast Finish

Creates a matte, uniform look by blasting glass beads. Excellent for parts to be painted or anodized, and ideal for components up to 24” × 24”.

Bead Blast Finish

▶ Sanding Random (Swirl)

Decorative swirl finish applied with abrasive pads. Widely used for signage, front panels, and parts where a distinctive texture is desired.

Swirl Sanding Finish

▶ Linear Sanding (Brushed)

Produces a consistent brushed grain, commonly seen on stainless steel covers and control panels. Great for visual parts that must appear uniform.

Linear Sanding Finish

▶ Tumbled Finish

Small parts polished in bulk using ceramic media. Perfect for deburring electronic connectors, jewelry parts, or small mechanical pieces.

Beyond mechanical finishes, we offer anodizing, powder coating, passivation, chem-film, electroplating, and painting. Each finish is tested for durability, corrosion protection, and appearance according to client needs.

4. Why It Matters

The correct finishing:
✔ Eliminates sharp edges
✔ Improves corrosion resistance
✔ Enhances appearance
✔ Ensures safe handling and compliance with standards
