A Practical Low-Volume Workflow

1. Submit the current filesProvide the 2D drawing, 3D model, material, quantity and intended use.
2. Review manufacturing risksCheck thin walls, deep pockets, tool access, clamping, tolerances and finishing.
3. Confirm the machining routeAgree on critical features, inspection needs and any approved DFM changes.
4. Produce and verify partsMachine the sample or batch and check the agreed dimensions and appearance.
5. Record the approved revisionUse the confirmed files and requirements as the basis for the next batch.

DFM Questions Worth Answering Early

Which features are functionally critical?Mark fits, datums, threads, sealing faces and assembly interfaces.
Can the part be held securely?Thin or irregular geometry may require additional fixture planning.
Are internal corners practical?Very small radii and deep cavities may need smaller tools and more machining time.
Will finishing affect the fit?Anodizing, plating or heat treatment may influence selected final dimensions.

Quality Control for Small Batches

Drawing Revision

Production follows the current approved files and specification.

Critical Dimensions

Inspection attention is assigned to features that influence function.

Finish & Appearance

Edges, visible surfaces and treatment results follow agreed criteria.

Reports if Required

Inspection or material documents should be defined before quotation.

Lead-time note: CNC samples commonly require approximately 5–10 working days, but timing depends on material availability, geometry, quantity, finishing and inspection requirements. Confirm the required delivery date with the RFQ.

Planning the Next Revision or Reorder

Repeat production should use the latest approved revision. If the design changes, clearly identify the new revision and modified features so the program, fixture and inspection plan can be reviewed before remachining.

Different versions may be quoted together, but each version should have a unique part number or revision identifier to prevent mixing.

  • Material, quantity and expected future volume
  • Surface finish, color and cosmetic surfaces
  • Assembly, inspection, certificate and packaging requirements
