CNC Material & Finish Guidance

A lower raw-material price does not always produce the lowest finished-part cost. Machinability, strength, corrosion resistance, appearance, coating thickness and assembly requirements should be reviewed together.

If your drawing allows alternatives, send the operating conditions and functional priorities. Our team can compare practical options before preparing the CNC quotation.

A Simple Selection Path for Custom CNC Parts

01
Define the Working Conditions

Load, temperature, moisture, chemicals, electrical contact, wear and outdoor exposure all influence material choice.

02
Identify the Critical Features

Mark fits, threads, sealing faces, bearing seats, mating surfaces and cosmetic areas on the drawing.

03
Select Material & Condition

Confirm alloy, grade, temper or heat-treatment condition—not only a general material family.

04
Choose the Finish & Masking

Define corrosion, appearance, conductivity and coating requirements, including areas that must remain uncoated.

Common Material Starting Points

Aluminum

Useful where lower weight, machinability and anodized appearance are important.

Stainless Steel

Considered for corrosion resistance, strength, cleanliness or a brushed/polished appearance.

Carbon / Alloy Steel

Selected for strength, wear resistance or heat-treatment requirements, usually with corrosion protection.

Copper / Brass

Used where conductivity, thermal performance, appearance or specific mechanical behavior matters.

Engineering Plastics

Suitable for insulation, lower weight, chemical resistance or low-friction applications.

Alternative Grades

Substitution should be based on function and drawing approval, not only availability or price.

What the Surface Finish Is Expected to Do

Corrosion ProtectionAnodizing, plating, passivation, painting or coating may be considered according to the base material and environment.
AppearanceColor, gloss, brushing direction, polishing level and cosmetic faces should be defined clearly.
Electrical FunctionContact or grounding areas may need masking, selective treatment or a specified conductive finish.
Wear / HardnessHeat treatment, hard coating or another engineered finish may be required for selected applications.
AssemblyCoating thickness can influence fits, holes, threads, sealing areas and mating interfaces.

Areas That Often Need Protection or Masking

  • Tight-tolerance holes, shafts and bearing seats
  • Internal or external threads
  • Electrical contact and grounding surfaces
  • Sealing faces and gasket interfaces
  • Press-fit and sliding interfaces
  • Laser-marking or cosmetic areas specified by the customer
Dimensional reminder: Specify whether a critical dimension applies before or after surface treatment. This is especially important where coating thickness affects fit or assembly.

Common Quotation Risks to Avoid

  • Using only “aluminum” or “stainless steel” without a grade
  • Requesting anodizing without color, type or cosmetic expectations
  • Leaving fitted or threaded areas unmarked
  • Mixing heat-treatment and finishing requirements without a sequence
  • Applying tight tolerances to every feature without functional priority
  • Changing material after programming or production has started

Information to Include with Your RFQ

  • STEP/STP or IGES/IGS model plus PDF or DWG drawing
  • Specified material grade and condition
  • Quantity and possible repeat-order volume
  • Critical dimensions, fits and datum references
  • Heat treatment and surface-finish specification
  • Color, cosmetic face, masking and electrical-contact areas
  • Inspection documents, destination and target delivery date
Engineering note: Recommendations are based on the submitted drawing and application information. Material, tolerance or finish changes require customer confirmation before production.
