CNC Production-Time Review

Machine cutting time is only one part of a CNC project. Programming, fixtures, setups, deburring, finishing, inspection and outside processes can also affect the delivery schedule.

Send your drawing and our team can review where the production route may be simplified before quotation. Any suggestion will be discussed with you before specifications are changed.

Five Factors That Commonly Extend CNC Lead Time

01
Multiple Setups

Features on several faces can require repositioning, datum transfer and verification between operations.

02
Restricted Tool Access

Deep pockets, narrow slots, small internal radii and angled holes may require special tools or slower cutting strategies.

03
Difficult Workholding

Thin walls, irregular profiles and limited clamping areas may need custom fixtures and lighter machining conditions.

04
Critical Tolerances

Tight fits, related bores, datums and surface-finish requirements can add controlled machining and inspection stages.

05
Secondary Processes

Heat treatment, grinding, anodizing, plating, passivation, inserts and assembly must be included in the full schedule.

How the Total Production Cycle Is Built

A simple turned component may use only a few stages. A multi-face precision part may require several setups, outside processing and final verification after finishing.

Where Production Time May Be Optimized

  • Machine more related features from one stable orientation when practical
  • Use accessible internal radii that match suitable cutting tools
  • Separate functionally critical tolerances from general dimensions
  • Provide stable clamping areas or allow temporary fixture features
  • Confirm whether dimensions apply before or after surface treatment
  • Plan inserts, threads and assembly operations in the correct sequence
Important: Production-time review is not permission to redesign the part. Drawing, material or tolerance changes require customer approval.

Geometry Can Matter More Than Overall Size

Deep CavitiesLong tool travel, chip removal and tool rigidity can affect cycle time.
Thin SectionsReduced stiffness may require lighter cuts and controlled clamping.
Small CornersSmall internal radii can require smaller tools and additional passes.
Large Stock RemovalHigh material-removal volume adds rough-machining time and may release stress.

Secondary Operations Need Separate Planning

Heat TreatmentMay divide work into rough machining and final machining.
GrindingRequires suitable stock allowance and a defined processing stage.
Surface TreatmentAnodizing, plating or passivation can affect critical surfaces and threads.
AssemblyInserts, bearings and fasteners add handling and verification work.
