PROTOTYPE SHEET METAL PARTS
Turn a drawing into a buildable metal prototype

Hongming Sheng manufactures drawing-based brackets, covers, housings, enclosures and welded assemblies through sheet metal rapid prototyping and low-volume fabrication.

The first build should answer practical questions about fit, assembly, access, strength, appearance and the route to repeat production.

From CAD File to First Build

Drawing & Revision Review

Confirm the latest files, material, quantity, interfaces and finish.

DFM Feedback

Review bend radii, hole positions, access, hardware and joining method.

Cutting & Forming

Laser cut or punch the blank, then form it using the planned bend sequence.

Joining & Hardware

Add PEM fasteners, rivets, TIG/MIG welds or subassemblies as specified.

Finishing

Deburr and apply the approved coating, anodizing, plating or brushed finish.

Inspection & Packing

Check agreed requirements and protect surfaces for shipment.

Material Choices for Early Builds

Aluminum

Useful where lower weight, corrosion resistance or anodized appearance is needed. Alloy and temper affect bending.

Stainless Steel

Suitable for corrosion resistance, clean appearance and demanding environments; springback and finish need attention.

Mild Steel

A practical choice for structural brackets, frames and painted or powder-coated prototypes.

Galvanized Sheet

Used for selected enclosures and internal structures where zinc-coated sheet is specified.

Prototype material should support the test purpose. If the prototype is intended to validate final performance, confirm the production material and thickness. If it is only for assembly checking, discuss whether an easier-to-source alternative is acceptable.

Define What the Prototype Must Prove

Fit & Function Review

  • Mating dimensions and datum relationships
  • PCB, connector and component clearance
  • Door, cover and fastener access
  • Load points and mounting interfaces
  • Assembly order and service access

Appearance Review

  • Visible and hidden surface definitions
  • Color, gloss and texture reference
  • Weld dressing and grind marks
  • Brushing direction or anodized finish
  • Areas that require masking or protection

Drawing Details That Reduce First-Build Questions

  • Show the current part number and drawing revision.
  • Define material grade, thickness and grain or brush direction where relevant.
  • Mark bend radii, bend direction and dimensions from functional datums.
  • Identify PEM hardware, rivets, weld symbols and supplied components.
  • Separate critical dimensions from general tolerances.
  • Mark cosmetic faces, finish, color, masking and protected areas.
  • State whether the prototype must represent the intended production process.
Tolerance should be applied by function. Laser cutting, bending, welding and surface finishing influence different features in different ways. Mark the dimensions that control fit or assembly so they can be reviewed individually.

Inspection & Documentation Options

Revision Check Match the 3D model, PDF drawing and purchase information before fabrication.
Critical Dimensions Inspect agreed interfaces and assembly-related features using suitable tools.
Material Documents Material certificates can be arranged when specified in the order.
Inspection Report Report scope and sampling should be agreed during quotation when required.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you make only one prototype?

One-off fabrication can be reviewed. Feasibility and price depend on material availability, geometry, finish and inspection requirements.

Do I need both a 3D model and a 2D drawing?

The 3D model defines geometry; the 2D drawing communicates tolerances, threads, datums, finish and inspection requirements. Supplying both reduces ambiguity.

Can the same design move into repeat production?

Yes, after prototype feedback is incorporated and the drawing revision is frozen. The production route may then be reviewed for batch efficiency and repeatability.
