Achieving Perfection in Stamping Parts Manufacturing: Best Practices from a Leading Manufacturer

PRECISION METAL STAMPING MANUFACTURER
Achieving Consistent Quality in Precision Stamping Parts Manufacturing

Precision stamping parts must perform consistently across every production batch. Dimensional stability, material performance, burr control, surface quality, and reliable tooling all influence the final component.

Hongming Sheng manufactures custom metal stamping parts according to customer drawings for automotive, electronics, industrial equipment, energy systems, communication products, and other OEM applications.

•Stamping presses from 80 to 1,000 tons
•Progressive die, compound die, and forming support
•Custom tooling based on customer drawings
•Prototype, trial production, and repeat orders

Manufacturing Quality Starts with DFM Review

A stable stamping process begins before tooling is manufactured. Our engineers review the drawing, material, tolerances, forming direction, production quantity, and functional requirements to identify potential manufacturing risks.

Part Geometry
Hole positions, bend areas, narrow sections, internal corners, and formed features are reviewed for tooling access and forming stability.
Material Behavior
Material grade, thickness, hardness, grain direction, elongation, and springback can affect the stamping and forming results.
Functional Requirements
Critical dimensions, mating surfaces, assembly locations, electrical contact areas, and cosmetic surfaces should be clearly identified.
Production Quantity
The expected quantity helps determine whether simple tooling, compound tooling, or progressive die stamping is the more suitable route.

Material Selection for Precision Stamping Parts

Material should be selected according to strength, formability, conductivity, corrosion resistance, surface finish, spring performance, and product application—not only according to raw material price.

Stainless Steel
304, 316, 301, and other grades can be reviewed for corrosion resistance, appearance, strength, and spring performance.
Carbon Steel and Coated Steel
SPCC, galvanized steel, and other steel grades are commonly used for brackets, supports, structural parts, covers, and industrial components.
Aluminum
Aluminum alloys are suitable for lightweight components, electronic parts, covers, heat-related products, and applications requiring corrosion resistance.
Copper and Brass
Copper and brass are often used for electrical contacts, terminals, conductive components, shielding parts, and heat-transfer applications.
Spring Steel and Phosphor Bronze
These materials can be reviewed for clips, contacts, retaining parts, spring components, and products requiring controlled elasticity.

Tooling Quality Determines Production Stability

The stamping die directly affects part dimensions, burr condition, forming consistency, production speed, and tool life. Tooling design should consider strip layout, material utilization, forming sequence, punch strength, maintenance access, and expected production volume.

•Review strip layout and material utilization before tooling production
•Plan cutting, punching, bending, forming, and separation stations
•Confirm critical die inserts, punches, clearances, and wear areas
•Conduct tooling trials before repeat production
•Record adjustments and inspection results for future production batches

Precision Stamping Production Process

01. Drawing and Requirement Review
Confirm material, thickness, quantity, critical dimensions, finish, assembly requirements, and inspection expectations.
02. Tooling Design and Manufacturing
Develop the tooling structure, strip layout, forming sequence, punches, inserts, and supporting fixtures.
03. Tool Trial and Sample Inspection
Produce trial parts, inspect agreed features, and adjust the tooling or process where necessary.
04. Production and In-Process Control
Monitor selected dimensions, burr condition, forming stability, material feeding, and tooling condition during production.
05. Final Inspection and Packing
Complete the agreed inspection, surface treatment, assembly, cleaning, and packaging before shipment.

Quality Control for Stamped Metal Components

Quality control should focus on the product features that affect fit, function, assembly, electrical performance, appearance, and service life.

•Incoming material:verify material specification, thickness, surface condition, and available certificates.
•First-piece inspection:confirm agreed dimensions and functional features before continuous production.
•In-process inspection:monitor critical dimensions, burrs, cracks, deformation, and tooling wear.
•Final inspection:check dimensions, appearance, finish, quantity, assembly condition, and packaging.
•Project documentation:material reports or dimensional records can be reviewed according to customer requirements.
Important:Not every dimension needs the same tolerance. Identifying functional and critical dimensions helps control manufacturing cost while maintaining product performance.

Secondary Processing and Finishing

Stamped parts can be supplied with additional processes according to the drawing and final application.

•Deburring, cleaning, and edge treatment
•Tapping, reaming, countersinking, and machining
•Welding, riveting, hardware installation, and mechanical assembly
