Press Riveting Nuts & Standoffs for Custom Sheet Metal Fabrication

Sheet Metal Hardware Integration
Self-Clinching Hardware Starts with the Correct Sheet Metal Interface

Nuts, standoffs, and studs can create strong mechanical mounting points in thin sheet metal without adding a separate welded nut.

For reliable installation, the hardware type, prepared hole, sheet thickness, installation side, surrounding geometry, and finishing sequence should be considered together.

Three Steps Behind a Pressed-In Fastener

STEP 01
Prepare the HoleThe hole diameter and edge condition should match the selected self-clinching hardware.
STEP 02
Press the HardwareThe nut, stud, or standoff is installed from the specified side using controlled pressing force.
STEP 03
Protect the InterfaceFinishing and assembly should preserve threads, mating surfaces, and required electrical contact areas.

Common Self-Clinching Hardware

Threaded Nuts
Create internal threads in thin sheet metal for removable covers, panels, brackets, or equipment mounting.
Standoffs
Provide a fixed spacing point for PCBs, control boards, panels, or internal modules.
Studs
Create a fixed threaded mounting point without requiring a loose bolt from the opposite side.

The Hole Is Part of the Fastener System

Press-in hardware does not work independently from the sheet metal. The surrounding material must provide the correct interface for the fastener to lock into the panel.

● Hole diameter should match the specified fastener
● Hole location should leave sufficient surrounding sheet material
● Sheet thickness should be compatible with the selected hardware
● Burrs or distorted holes can affect installation
● Nearby bends should be considered before hardware placement

Hardware Position Should Follow the Assembly

PCB Mounting
Standoff height and position should match the board mounting-hole pattern and required clearance.
Cover Fastening
Threaded nuts can support removable lids, side panels, service covers, and access doors.
Internal Brackets
Studs or nuts can provide assembly points for power modules, rails, supports, or secondary brackets.
Equipment Interface
Hardware position should remain compatible with the mating component after bending and finishing.

Hardware Installation & Surface Finish Need the Correct Sequence

Pressed hardware may be installed before or after surface treatment depending on the material, coating, hardware type, electrical requirements, and final assembly.

Cut / Punch → Bend → Hardware Installation → Finish → Final Assembly

The actual sequence should follow the project specification. Threads and critical contact surfaces may need protection during coating or other finishing operations.

Areas Worth Checking Before Production

Near a Bend
Hardware placed too close to a bend may interfere with forming or become difficult to install afterward.
Near an Edge
The fastener needs enough surrounding sheet material to support the installation.
Installation Side
The drawing should make clear which side receives the hardware and which side is the functional mounting face.
Coated Surface
Powder coating, anodizing, or plating should be considered where the fastener interface or threads must remain functional.
