the basic requirements of metal stamping parts process

Metal stamping · Tooling · Part inspection
How a stamped metal part moves from drawing to repeat production

Metal stamping forms sheet or strip into components through operations such as blanking, piercing, bending and drawing. The right tool and process depend on part geometry, material, tolerances and expected order volume.

Hongming Sheng reviews these requirements before recommending a manufacturing route for custom brackets, contacts, formed panels and other components.

The Stamping Process: Four Decisions That Shape the Result

01

Review the drawing

Identify material, thickness, part function, tolerance locations and assembly features.

02

Choose the process

Compare blanking, piercing, forming and bending operations with the expected production volume.

03

Develop the tooling

Plan die clearance, strip layout, forming sequence and inspection points; trial the tool before approval.

04

Run and inspect

Monitor critical dimensions, burrs, formed features and appearance during production.

Common Operations and Tooling Routes

Blanking & Piercing

Cut an outer profile or produce holes and slots. Edge quality and burr direction should be defined where they affect fit or handling.

Bending & Forming

Create flanges, tabs, offsets and shaped features. Bend radius, material grain and springback affect the finished geometry.

Drawing

Form deeper shapes when the design and material support it. Draw depth and thinning require review during tool planning.

Single Operation Tooling

A practical route for selected parts and quantities. The tooling plan is evaluated against unit cost and production needs.

Progressive Dies

Multiple operations take place across successive stations as strip advances through the tool, often suited to repeat orders.

Secondary Work

Deburring, tapping, hardware insertion, welding, finishing and assembly can be reviewed alongside the stamping route.

What to Check Before Approving a Stamped Part

Part and material

  • Material grade, temper and sheet thickness
  • Critical holes, bends, edges and mating features
  • Surface finish and visible faces

Production plan

  • Prototype and expected repeat order quantities
  • Tooling ownership and sample approval
  • Inspection requirements and packaging

For more information about available processes, see our stamping and bending range. Specific material, die type and tolerance capability are confirmed after drawing review.
