What material is used for rotating shafts?

Rotating Shaft Material Affects Both Performance & Machining Route

A shaft material should be selected according to the customer's mechanical, environmental, and assembly requirements.

From a manufacturing perspective, material choice also affects turning behavior, heat treatment, grinding, corrosion protection, surface finish, and inspection planning.

Common Materials for CNC-Machined Shafts

MaterialTypical Manufacturing Considerations
Carbon SteelCommon for general mechanical shafts. Heat treatment, grinding, black oxide, plating, or other protection may be specified depending on the application.
Alloy SteelOften selected where additional strength, wear resistance, or heat-treatment response is required. Final machining may need to be coordinated with hardening.
Stainless SteelUseful where corrosion resistance is important. Machining should consider cutting heat, tool wear, burr condition, and required surface finish.
AluminumSuitable for selected lightweight shaft or rotating components where lower mass is important and the mechanical requirements allow it.
TitaniumMay be specified for specialized applications requiring low weight and corrosion resistance, but machining behavior and material cost should be reviewed carefully.

Material Choice Changes the Manufacturing Sequence

Heat TreatmentSome steel shafts may require hardening before final grinding or finish machining.
GrindingSelected journals or fitted diameters may require grinding after turning or heat treatment.
Surface ProtectionPlating, black oxide, passivation, or other finishes may be specified according to the material and service environment.
Machining AllowanceAdditional stock may need to remain on surfaces that will be ground or finished later.
InspectionMaterial condition and final processing should be considered when checking critical shaft dimensions.

Do Not Select Material by Strength Alone

● Required shaft strength
● Corrosion environment
● Bearing or seal interfaces
● Heat-treatment requirement
● Surface finish or coating
● Weight requirement
● Availability of the specified material

Steel Shafts May Need Several Manufacturing Stages

A typical steel shaft can involve rough turning, heat treatment, finish turning, milling of keyways or flats, grinding of selected journals, and final surface treatment.

The actual sequence should follow the drawing rather than applying the same process to every shaft.

Material & Feature Requirements Should Be Reviewed Together

Bearing JournalMaterial hardness, diameter tolerance, and surface finish may all influence the final manufacturing method.
Threaded EndThread machining should be coordinated with heat treatment and surface coating where applicable.
Keyway / FlatThese features may require milling after the main turning operations.
Seal SurfaceMaterial condition and surface finish may be important where a seal contacts the shaft.
