Sheet Metal Stamping Parts – High-Precision Manufacturing Solutions

A Stamped Part Changes Shape at Every Forming Stage

Sheet metal stamping begins with a flat blank, but the final component may include holes, bends, flanges, ribs, tabs, embossments, and other formed features.

The relationship between these features should be considered throughout the forming sequence, because geometry can change as the sheet is bent or drawn.

From Flat Sheet to Finished Part

Blank → Pierce → Form → Flange → Trim → Final Check
01
Flat BlankThe starting profile establishes the material available for later forming operations.
02
Holes & OpeningsPierced features should be reviewed in relation to nearby bends, edges, and formed areas.
03
Bends & FlangesForming changes the three-dimensional geometry and can influence adjacent dimensions.
04
Formed FeaturesRibs, embossments, tabs, or local shapes can add stiffness, location, or assembly functions.
05
Final Trim or RestrainSome parts may require trimming or an additional forming operation to bring selected geometry into its final condition.

Features Close to a Bend Need Attention

A hole or slot positioned near a forming area may behave differently from the same feature located on a flat section.

● Hole-to-bend distance
● Slot orientation
● Edge distance
● Bend radius
● Flange length
● Relief around formed corners

Springback Is Part of Forming

After bending or forming pressure is released, sheet metal may recover slightly. The amount depends on material, thickness, bend geometry, and forming method.

For this reason, the tool and forming process may need adjustment so that the finished part matches the required geometry rather than simply reproducing the nominal tool angle.

Material Direction Can Influence Forming

Sheet material behavior is not always identical in every direction. For parts with several bends or formed areas, bend orientation and material condition may need to be considered during tooling review.

Not Every Feature Has to Be Created in One Stroke

A stamped component may be produced through several operations rather than one forming action. Piercing, bending, flanging, embossing, trimming, and restrike operations can be arranged in sequence according to the part geometry and production method.

Useful Drawing Information

● Material and thickness
● Flat and formed dimensions
● Bend radii and angles
● Hole and slot positions
● Burr direction where relevant
● Critical formed features
● Surface finish and quantity
