CNC Material & Finish Review
Material and Surface Finish Should Be Reviewed Together Before Quotation
For a custom CNC part, material selection and surface treatment are closely connected to the machining route, critical dimensions, cosmetic surfaces, and final assembly.
The review should follow the customer's drawing and application requirements rather than applying one standard finish to every part.

Send CNC DrawingFour Areas to Review
01MaterialConfirm the specified alloy, grade, stock form, and any required heat-treatment condition.
02MachiningReview how the material affects cutting, workholding, tool access, burr condition, and finishing sequence.
03Surface TreatmentCheck whether anodizing, plating, passivation, powder coating, polishing, or another specified finish is required.
04Functional InterfaceIdentify threads, fits, sealing areas, electrical contact points, and cosmetic surfaces that may need special treatment or masking.
Common Material & Finish Combinations
AluminumOften combined with anodizing, conversion coating, painting, or other specified finishes depending on the project.
Stainless SteelMay use passivation, brushing, polishing, or other specified finishing where required.
Carbon / Alloy SteelMay require plating, black oxide, painting, heat treatment, or other corrosion-protection processes.
Copper / BrassMay be left as machined or receive plating or other surface treatment according to the electrical or assembly requirement.
Engineering PlasticsUsually rely more on material condition and machined surface quality than metallic coating processes.
Surface Treatment Can Affect Dimensions
Finishing is not always purely cosmetic. A coating or treatment can influence fitted diameters, threaded areas, sealing surfaces, electrical contacts, or mating interfaces.
● Identify tight fits before coating
● Mark threads that require protection
● Define electrical contact areas if coating should be avoided
● Identify cosmetic surfaces separately from functional surfaces
● Consider coating thickness where it affects assembly
Finish Sequence May Affect the Machining Route
Before Heat TreatmentSome rough machining may be completed before hardening.
After Heat TreatmentSelected dimensions may require final machining or grinding afterward.
Before CoatingMachining, deburring, cleaning, and thread preparation are generally completed first.
After CoatingAssembly, protected-thread verification, or other final operations may follow according to the project.
