Rapid CNC Machining Quotes with Free Technical Risk Assessment

Some CNC Features Carry More Manufacturing Risk Than Others

A part can look straightforward in CAD but still contain features that increase machining difficulty, deformation risk, setup complexity, or inspection uncertainty.

Reviewing these areas before production helps define a more practical machining route.

Common CNC Manufacturing Risks

Thin WallsLarge material removal can reduce rigidity and increase the chance of movement during machining.
Deep PocketsDeep cavities may create tool-reach, chip-removal, and cutting-stability challenges.
Small Internal RadiiVery small corner radii can require small tools and longer machining time.
Difficult WorkholdingParts with limited clamping surfaces may require additional fixture planning.
Multi-Side FeaturesFeatures located on several faces may create setup and datum relationship challenges.
Tight Feature RelationshipsRelated holes, bores, mating faces, or locating features may require more careful sequencing.

Risk Can Appear After Material Is Removed

Stress ReleaseRemoving a large amount of stock can change the geometry of thin or uneven sections.Clamping InfluenceA part may measure differently while clamped than after it is released.
Surface TreatmentAnodizing, plating, heat treatment, or other secondary processes may influence critical interfaces.Final AssemblyThreads, inserts, mating surfaces, and mounting features need to work together after all processes are complete.

What Should Be Reviewed Before Production?

● Which dimensions are functionally critical?
● Which surfaces are used as datums?
● Are there thin walls or unsupported sections?
● Can all features be reached with practical tooling?
● Will secondary finishing affect fits or threads?
● Does the part require several machining setups?

Risk Review Is Not the Same as Redesign

The purpose of machining risk review is to identify manufacturing concerns in the submitted design. Any suggested change should be discussed with the customer before the drawing or specification is modified.

Parts That Often Need Extra Review

● Thin-wall housings
● Deep-pocket aluminum parts
● Multi-face machined components
● Parts with several related bores
● Components requiring machining plus surface treatment

Have a CNC Part with Difficult Features?

Send your drawing, material, quantity, finish, critical dimensions, and assembly requirements. Our team can review the machining route and identify manufacturing areas that may need additional attention.

Customer drawings, CAD files, samples, and technical specifications are treated as confidential. NDA support is available for OEM projects.
